On August 18, 2013, Kalpana Raghuraman performs her multimedia work The Spirit of Frida, in an informal environment. Inspired by the Mexican painter and feminist icon, Frida Kahlo, this choreography is rooted in how Frida represents strength, courage and the boundlessness of the human spirit. Raghuraman will show excerpts of her other works and engage in a Q & A session with the audience. Watch excerpts of The Spirit of Frida here.
Born and raised in the Netherlands and also deeply rooted in Indian culture, Kalpana sees herself as a bridge-builder between cultures, traditions, and people. She began learning Bharatanatyam with her mother, later travelling to India to expand and intensify her training and to do research for her studies in cultural anthropology. Kalpana has been an artist-in-residence at the Korzo theater, one of Holland’s main producers of contemporary dance. She has created several contemporary dance performances, including Kiss of Life, Towards Dawn and Lost in Grey. Kalpana has also been invited as a guest choreographer to different countries.
